An Afternoon with David Simon

Boston coffee fanatics may better know David Simon as the man behind Black Magic Coffee Company, a full-service, mobile coffee bar. David is a regular at the SOWA Market, Zipcar, and various pop-ups around the city. We have connected on various forms of social media for a couple of years, and I can say that he is one of the bright spots in the Boston coffee scene.

Recently, David was nice enough to invite me (and my camera) to Kitchen Inc., a shared-use commercial kitchen and event space in Somerville, where he keeps his equipment. Little did he know that I had been wanting to do a photo project exactly like this for a while. It's no secret that I love coffee, but I also love the process of making it, and the thoughtfulness that goes into every aspect of creating a good cup: selecting quality beans, dialing in the right grind and extraction time, and pouring the final product. Over the course of a highly-caffienated afternoon, he made several espressos, cortados, cappuccinos, and brought out the Chemex for a great filter cup. There's nothing like witnessing someone do what they truly love, and I had a lot of fun capturing David in his element.
